Thursday, January 7, 2010 - At approximately 1330 hours the Hazardous Materials Technicians from Squad 27 responded as part of HAMMER 15 (Burlington County HAZMAT) to the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Bucks County to assist with an overturned tanker. Crews arrived to find a tractor and tank trailer on its side with a full load (8500 gallons) of gasoline. The members of Hammer 15 formulated the plan of how the load would be transferred. Crews then ensured the truck was safe by securing the power, ensuring proper bonding, and access points. Once this was completed the crews drilled holes in the tank to allow for the offloading of the gasoline. The HAMMER 15 crews worked with the response team from Rohm and Haas, Bucks County Fire and EMS Units, and a private contractor to safely transfer the entire load with minimal product spilled. HAMMER 15 crews were in service for approximately seven hours and returned to quarters around 2030 hours.
