Tuesday, December 1, 2009 06:15 - At approximately 0615hrs Squad 27 and the rest of the assignment was dispatched to the NJ Turnpike Southbound in the area of milepost 42 for a motor vehicle accident, rescue assignment, reported vehicle fire. Squad 27 with 5 members and Ambulance 5091 arrived to find cars scattered over the road and in the ditch. One vehicle in the center of the roadway had been T-boned on the driver side by a tractor trailer and was fully involved with fire. The crew from Squad 27 stretched a line and extinguished the fire as the driver stretched the extrication tools and cribbing to the scene. The fire was quickly extinguished and it was determined a very short time later that there was an obvious fatality in the vehicle. During this time Ambulance 5091 triaged patients from the other five vehicles, including two vehicles off the roadway and into a ditch on the side. Traffic 27 was utilized to control the Turnpike entrance/exit at Route 541.
Crews remained on the scene for approximately three hours assisting the state police with their investigation and extricating the victim.
